Ventilation Matters: Preventing Moisture and Ice Dams

Proper attic ventilation prevents costly problems. Learn how it works and signs yours may be inadequate.

Attic ventilation is one of the most overlooked aspects of roofing. Poor ventilation causes moisture damage, ice dams, and premature material failure.

How Attic Ventilation Works

Cool air enters through soffit vents at the eaves, rises as it warms, and exits through ridge or gable vents at the top. This airflow removes moisture and heat.

Signs of Poor Ventilation

  • Ice dams forming at eaves in winter
  • Condensation or frost in attic
  • Mold or mildew on attic surfaces
  • Unusually hot upstairs rooms in summer
  • Peeling paint on exterior near roofline

Poor ventilation voids most shingle manufacturer warranties. It is that important to roof performance.

Ventilation Standards

Building code requires 1 square foot of ventilation per 150 square feet of attic floor space, split evenly between intake and exhaust.

During any roof replacement, we assess and upgrade ventilation as needed at no extra diagnostic cost.
