When a storm damages your roof and professional help is days away, temporary protection becomes critical. Here are effective methods we recommend.
Safety first. Never climb on a wet, damaged, or steep roof. These methods can often be applied from ground level or attic.
Tarp Application
- Use heavy-duty poly tarps rated for outdoor use
- Extend tarp at least 4 feet beyond damage on all sides
- Secure with sandbags or weighted boards
- Never nail or screw through the tarp
- Ensure water flows off, not under the tarp
From Inside the Attic
- Place buckets under active leaks
- Use plastic sheeting to direct water to buckets
- Apply roofing cement to visible holes as temporary seal
- Mark leak locations for repair crew
